This step was taken after Russian authorities discovered that a British Embassy employee had deliberately given false information about himself while entering the country. The investigation revealed that the officer had given false information in his visa application.
According to the Foreign Ministry, this is a violation of Russian law. This action has been taken under Article 9 of the Vienna Convention of 1961. Under this, the recognition of any diplomat can be removed. Citing the investigation, the FSB said that the undeclared presence of the intelligence agency in the British Embassy has been detected.
According to the agency, during the investigation, indications were also found of the concerned officer’s involvement in intelligence and subversive activities, which could have posed a threat to Russia’s security. This is not the first case when Russia has taken such action. In January this year also, a secretary of the British Embassy was expelled from the country.
