Afghanistan has made amazingly inhumane changes in its laws. The practice of slavery which had disappeared from the world hundreds of years ago, has been re-recognized by the Taliban administration.
afghanistan Recently, there has been a lot of controversy regarding a new criminal procedure code issued by the Taliban administration. In January 2026, this code was approved by the supreme leader of Taliban, Hibatullah Akhundzada and orders were given to implement it in the courts. Slavery has been directly recognized in this law. Words like “Ghulam/slave” and “Master” have been used at many places in this document.
Human rights organizations around the world have expressed concern about this word and have given a sharp reaction. Human rights groups say that Taliban Code which divides citizens into four unequal classes. In this category, slaves have been kept as a legal category. This new law also gives immunity to Mullahs or Maulvis from crimes. This means that if a mullah commits a crime then he cannot be prosecuted.
Article 9 of the Taliban’s new code divides Afghan society into four classes, with Mullahs and Maulvis at the top. Those who will not be given any punishment for any crime, but will only be explained to them. Whereas people at the lowest level will have to face both jail and physical punishment. This claim has been made by an organization named Ravadari. In Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, punishment for the same crime will now vary depending on the class of the criminal.
Human rights organization Rawadari said that this divided the society into “free” and “slave”, which is completely prohibited in international law. Recognizing slavery in any form is against human dignity and equality. In the Taliban’s code, society is divided into four classes. These classes are- Ulema, Ashraf, middle class and lower class.
Through this code, Taliban is trying to indirectly legalize a situation like slavery. This is being considered a step to further strengthen the already ongoing restrictions on the rights of women, children and minorities in Afghanistan.
Earlier this month, Taliban’s supreme leader Akhundzada approved a legal document consisting of 119 articles. Its purpose is to guide judicial processes in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.
The Supreme Council of National Resistance for the Salvation of Afghanistan, a coalition of political leaders and groups opposed to Taliban rule, said the provisions go against the principles of equality, human dignity and the international ban on slavery, and are “far worse than the Middle Ages.”
Former Attorney General of Afghanistan Mohammad Farid Hamidi wrote on X that this is a document which incriminates all citizens. He said that humiliating people is a clear insult, a direct attack on human dignity, and a serious violation of human values.
First women’s human rights were snatched away, now slavery is practiced
Let us tell you that Taliban’s record in terms of women’s rights has already been very bad. Last year, the Taliban had banned 140 books written by women. The order, issued in late August 2025, also banned the teaching of 18 subjects, which Taliban officials said conflicted with Sharia law and their policies.
Now the Taliban has tried to recognize the barbaric slavery system of the medieval period.
